De Wetshof Estate, South Africa’s pioneering Chardonnay producer in the Robertson Wine Valley, has once again affirmed its global standing with its Limestone Hill Chardonnay 2025 receiving a coveted Gold Medal at the 33rd Chardonnay du Monde, held in Burgundy, France.
De Wetshof was one of only three South African producers to secure a place on the Gold Medal podium, underscoring the estate’s continued excellence on the international stage.

The unwooded Limestone Hill Chardonnay distinguished itself among 471 entries from 25 countries. Judged blind by a panel of 200 international experts from 10 to 12 March, only 155 wines received medals, with just 74 achieving Gold — placing Limestone Hill firmly among the world’s top Chardonnays of the year.
Crafted from vineyards rooted in De Wetshof’s limestone-rich clay soils, the 2025 vintage expresses vibrant layers of grapefruit, pear, and citrus, complemented by refined minerality, subtle nuttiness, and a fresh, balanced finish. Produced without oak influence, the wine highlights purity, finesse, and exceptional drinkability — hallmarks that have long defined its style.
These qualities have earned praise from global critics, including Robert Parker, who has noted the wine’s remarkable balance and length, often surpassing many of its international peers. Today, Limestone Hill remains one of South Africa’s most recognisable and commercially successful Chardonnays.
“This Gold Medal is a tremendous honour for our team and a testament to the outstanding 2025 vintage in the Cape,” says Johann de Wet. “It also highlights that unwooded South African Chardonnay can stand shoulder to shoulder with oaked styles on the global stage, showcasing the remarkable versatility of this varietal.”
He adds that the success of Limestone Hill is rooted in the estate’s unique terroir: “Our limestone soils and temperate continental climate allow the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while retaining a distinct varietal character and sense of place — qualities that define the final wine.”
Recognition in Burgundy — widely regarded as the spiritual home of Chardonnay — further reinforces De Wetshof’s commitment to producing authentic, site-driven wines that compete confidently among the world’s best.
