Franschhoek’s Chamonix Estate has secured well-deserved recognition in Tim Atkin MW’s 2025 South Africa Report, with a series of standout scores that highlight the estate’s terroir-driven philosophy and meticulous winemaking.
The 2023 Chardonnay Reserve led the way with an impressive 94 points, a wine noted for its balance, finesse, and ageing potential. “These scores are a wonderful affirmation of the effort that goes into each vintage,” says winemaker Neil Bruwer. “They tell us that we are expressing the true character of our terraced slopes and mineral-rich soils. It’s not about flashy fruit, but about capturing the essence of our land.”

Chamonix’s commitment to Chardonnay was further underlined by the 2023 Greywacke Chardonnay (Cape Coast), which earned 90 points, adding versatility to the estate’s white portfolio. The Old Vine Steen 2023 (Chenin Blanc) also shone with 93 points, showcasing fruit from 60-year-old vines. “This wine reflects the wisdom of our older vineyards and the heritage that sustains them,” says Bruwer.
Red wines also performed strongly, with the Pinot Noir Reserve receiving 90 points—a notable achievement for a variety often considered challenging in South Africa. “Pinot Noir demands finesse, patience, and precise vineyard work,” notes Bruwer. “To see it recognised in this way is encouraging and confirms Franschhoek’s potential for wines of delicacy and complexity.”
Across the portfolio, Atkin’s praise underscores Chamonix’s philosophy of respecting terroir. Diverse soils of limestone, shale, and granite each imprint their character, creating wines that embody both finesse and authenticity. “Every decision aims to promote expression rather than manipulation,” says Bruwer. “The vineyard is our first canvas—what we do there is the foundation for what we get in the glass.”
While the scores mark an important milestone, Bruwer sees them as motivation rather than a destination. “Our focus remains on crafting wines that age gracefully and truly represent Franschhoek,” he says. “The recognition is a reminder to keep pushing boundaries while staying rooted in a sense of place.”
As South Africa’s reputation continues to rise internationally, Chamonix’s achievements reaffirm the estate’s role as a quiet yet powerful voice in the country’s ongoing story of quality and terroir-driven winemaking.
