Delheim Wine Estate’s mushroom foraging forays on the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch have become so popular that this year the event will be held over two weekends. Visitors can enjoy a day of collecting their own mushrooms followed by a true taste of Delheim hospitality, complete with refreshments, food, and a selection of the estate’s award-winning wines.
Dates and Opportunities
Guests have four opportunities to take part in the foraging experience:
- Friday 13th and Saturday 14th June
- Thursday 4th and Friday 5th July
Foraging Programme
Each day’s programme includes:
- Mushroom Identification Session: A practical guide led by mushroom specialist Gary Goldman.
- Foraging Session: An exploration in the Delheim mountain pine forests, home to over 20 species of wild mushrooms. (Please note that specific mushrooms cannot be guaranteed.)
- Curated Lunch: A hearty meal served in the traditional ambience of the estate’s Vat Cellar, featuring mushroom-related options and a tasting selection of exceptional Delheim wines.
Special Feature: Celebrating 100 Years of Pinotage
2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the Pinotage grape. As early pioneers of Pinotage since 1960, Delheim is featuring a selection of older Pinotage wines available for tasting alongside other estate wines during the event.
Practical Details for Participants
- Pre-Forage Reception: The day begins with an introduction by Gary Goldman, along with coffee, gluhwein, muffins, and rusks.
- Forage Preparation: Dress appropriately for chilly weather. It is advisable to bring a rain jacket, good walking or hiking boots, a basket, and a small pocketknife.
- Post-Forage Celebration: The foraging session will be followed by lunch and a wine selection in the Vat Cellar.
Booking Information
- Capacity: Limited to 35 adults and five children (aged 6 to 17) per day.
- Pricing: R1000 per adult and R850 for children.
