Mushroom enthusiasts and nature lovers are in for a treat this year as Delheim Wine Estate in Stellenbosch once again hosts a weekend dedicated to the art of foraging for wild mushrooms. Nestled in the scenic mountain pine forests of Delheim, home to over 20 species of wild mushrooms, this event on Friday, June 14th, and Saturday, June 15th promises an unforgettable experience of culinary delights paired with the estate’s award-winning wines.
Guests will have the unique opportunity to join expert guide Gary Goldman on a foraging adventure through the estate’s woods. The day begins with an introduction by Gary over coffee, gluhwein, muffins, and rusks, setting the stage for an enlightening session on mushroom identification. A hearty mushroom soup is served to awaken the senses before embarking on the foraging journey into the Delheim forest, under the majestic Simonsberg of Stellenbosch.
Gary, a renowned figure in mushrooming circles, will lead the way, sharing his expert knowledge and practical insights. Please note that while the adventure holds the promise of discovery, specific mushroom finds cannot be guaranteed. Guests are advised to dress warmly for possible chilly weather, with rain jackets and sturdy walking or hiking boots. Don’t forget to bring along a basket and a small pocket knife for collecting your treasures.
Following the foraging session, a delectable three-course lunch awaits at the Delheim Restaurant, featuring dishes that showcase the textures and flavors of these magical mushrooms. Guests will also receive copies of Delheim’s family recipes, offering various methods for preparing and cooking mushrooms to savor at home.
As a parting gift, each guest will take home a bottle of Delheim wine to continue the enjoyment beyond the event. The schedule for both mushroom days, June 14th and 15th, at Delheim is as follows:
