In the world of wine, reputations are often built on fleeting trends, but some estates stand apart, cemented by decades of dedication. Delheim is one such cornerstone of the Stellenbosch region. With over eighty years of history, the family-owned estate has navigated the changing tides of winemaking while remaining steadfast in its commitment to place and lineage.
This commitment to excellence has recently been validated by one of the industry’s most respected voices. In his 2026 South Africa Special Report, Master of Wine Tim Atkin recognised Delheim for its unwavering consistency and the premium quality of wines derived from its unique Simonsberg terroir. Atkin’s evaluation process is rigorous—he tasted over 1,800 wines from more than 350 producers—making the high scores achieved by Delheim even more significant.
The standout performance came from the 2023 Vera Cruz Pinotage, which earned a prestigious 95 points. The estate’s expertise across varietals was further highlighted by the 2024 Edelspatz OVP Riesling and the 2022 Grand Reserve red Bordeaux blend, both scoring 94 points. Rounding out this strong showing, the Wild Ferment OVP Chenin Blanc 2025 and 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon each achieved 93 points, with the Iconoclast Cabernet Franc 2022 following at 92.
For the team at Delheim, the 95-point score for the Vera Cruz Pinotage holds particular weight. As cellarmaster Roelof Lotriet notes, the estate was a pioneer, producing one of the first Pinotage wines in 1960. Today, however, the approach has evolved. Rather than relying on the traditional caricatures of the variety, Lotriet focuses on elegance, texture, and balance to showcase Pinotage as a finely structured wine capable of grace and longevity.
This ambition extends to the entire portfolio. The 94-point Grand Reserve represents a historic chapter for the estate, standing as one of the earliest examples of a Cape Cabernet-led blend that proved South Africa could produce Bordeaux-style wines of true seriousness. It serves as a testament to an estate that champions varieties outside the mainstream while respecting its historic red-wine traditions.
Ultimately, these results offer more than just numbers; they signal the contemporary relevance of the estate. Co-owner and director Nora Thiel emphasises that Delheim is not being rewarded simply for its longevity, but because its deep-rooted traditions provide the foundation for ongoing innovation and refinement.
