Diemersdal, a farm with roots tracing back to 1698, is looking to the past to define its future with the new Prospect range. Inspired by a box of old photographs discovered on the property, each bottle serves as a tribute to the generations of the Louw family who have tended the land since 1885. Rather than merely leaning on nostalgia, these wines represent a deliberate winemaking philosophy, where each site and vintage is chosen to express its unique character. The Prospect Sauvignon Blanc 2025 draws from a vineyard in Darling, where the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean preserves the grape’s natural acidity. The fruit, grown on a twenty-year-old block in soil enriched with iron and limestone, delivers a complex profile of ripe stone fruit, struck-flint, and a faint, saline finish. Aged for eleven months in 225-litre barrels and terracotta amphorae, this wine is built for pairing with fire-cooked West Coast seafood.
In contrast, the Prospect Barbera 2024 brings an unusual, vibrant energy to Durbanville. Staying true to the variety’s Italian roots, it offers a crunchy profile led by cherry and cranberry, with savoury notes of wild thyme, pine needle, and white pepper. Its structured acidity and gentle tannins make it an ideal partner for tomato-based dishes, slow-cooked stews, or matured hard cheeses.
Rounding out the trio is the Prospect Solderwyn NV, a unique take on a fortified wine inspired by the Madeira Canteiro system. Crafted from frozen Sauvignon Blanc grapes to intensify flavour and sugar content, the wine is fortified and aged in the attic of the cellar, where summer heat climbs to forty-five degrees. This process creates a deep, amber-gold wine with layers of charred honey, dried apricot, candied orange peel, and toasted almond.
The Prospect range is currently available exclusively at the Diemersdal estate tasting room. The Prospect Darling Sauvignon Blanc 2025 (1.5L Magnum) and the Prospect Barbera 2024 (1.5L Magnum) are each priced at R450 per bottle, while the Prospect Solderwyn (500ml) is available for R300 per bottle.
