Diemersdal Estate, renowned for its innovation and dedication to premium Sauvignon Blanc, has made history by introducing a first-of-its-kind winemaking approach in South Africa. The Diemersdal Globe Sauvignon Blanc 2023 is the country’s first wine fermented and matured in Wineglobes—bulbous, 220-liter pure glass containers developed in Bordeaux, France.
This groundbreaking method, used predominantly by French winemakers since its commercial release in 2020, provides a completely neutral fermentation environment unlike traditional materials such as wood, concrete, stainless steel, or amphorae. By eliminating external influences, Wineglobes allow for an unparalleled expression of terroir, enhancing the precision, purity, and structure of the wine.
A Revolutionary Winemaking Approach
Winemaker and proprietor Thys Louw describes The Globe Sauvignon Blanc 2023 as a landmark moment in Diemersdal’s winemaking journey, adding a new dimension of clarity and focus to a varietal he has already explored in eight different expressions.

“Wood imparts its own flavor, and like concrete and amphorae, is porous, while stainless steel interacts with static electricity,” explains Louw. “The Wineglobes create a completely enclosed and uninfluenced space, allowing the Sauvignon Blanc to showcase its full potential. I thought I had fully understood Diemersdal’s Sauvignon Blanc profile, but this experience has shown me an entirely new side of its depth and purity.”
Meticulous Craftsmanship & Purity in Every Step
Crafted from a single vineyard planted 31 years ago, The Globe Sauvignon Blanc embodies Diemersdal’s commitment to excellence and tradition. The dryland vines, thriving without irrigation, ensure a concentrated and expressive fruit profile, forming the foundation for this distinctive wine.
- Harvesting & Fermentation: After careful hand-harvesting, the grapes were destemmed and crushed, with some whole berries added to enhance structure and complexity.
- 10-Day Fermentation: The juice was placed in 220L Wineglobes, where it fermented over 10 days.
- 12 Months in Wineglobes: The wine then remained in these glass vessels for a full year, allowing slow maturation while preserving its delicate aromas and vibrant acidity.
- Careful Lees Stirring: Monthly lees stirring helped integrate flavors, enhancing texture without over-manipulation.
Winemaker Juandré Bruwer emphasizes the minimal intervention philosophy, ensuring the wine evolves naturally within a controlled environment.
“The Wineglobes remain untouched during the aging process, except for gentle monthly lees stirring, which keeps the wine in contact with its fine sediment. This technique adds texture without compromising the purity of fruit,” says Bruwer. “The cellar maintains a constant 18°C temperature, ensuring no additional cooling is needed, preserving the wine’s natural vibrancy.”
A Timeless Tribute to Innovation & Heritage
Diemersdal has encapsulated the essence of this pioneering wine through a distinctive label design, merging heritage and forward-thinking vision.
The label proudly features the Louw family crest, which has been synonymous with Diemersdal for six generations since 1885. At its center is an hourglass, symbolizing the timeless nature of winemaking and the estate’s ongoing commitment to craftsmanship, evolution, and tradition.
“The hourglass reflects both the passing of time and the future of winemaking,” says Louw. “It’s a reminder that while we honor tradition, we must always look ahead, embracing new possibilities.”
