Wine enthusiasts, especially fans of South Africa’s iconic Pinotage, should mark their calendars for a new release from Badsberg Wine Cellar in the Breede Valley. The cellar’s latest vintage—a 2022 single vineyard Pinotage—promises to uphold its award-winning legacy.
This exceptional wine originates from Philippie van der Merwe’s Groote Vlakte farm, nestled at the foot of the Badsberg mountains. The unique terroir of the region, with its cold, wet winters, warm, dry summers, and well-drained rocky hillside soils, creates the perfect environment for cultivating premium Pinotage grapes. The grapes for Badsberg’s 2022 Pinotage come from a 15-year-old vineyard on the farm, which has a history of excellence: it was the source of the winning wine that claimed the General Smuts Trophy at the 2016 SA Young Wine Show.
Under the guidance of cellar master Willie Burger and his accomplished team, Badsberg consistently crafts wines that win top awards nationally and internationally. The 2021 vintage of their Pinotage recently secured a gold medal at the 2023 Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Competition, adding to its accolades at the Veritas Awards and Vitis Vinifera Wine Awards.
Winemaker Jaco Booysen describes the 2022 Pinotage as having “distinctive ripe plum flavours,” with aging in French oak barrels adding “a lovely vanilla character, seamlessly integrated into the wine.” Booysen notes that the wine shows excellent aging potential, up to five years.
Part of Badsberg’s Premium range, the 2022 Pinotage is available for R115 per bottle on their website, www.badsberg.co.za, and in stores nationwide.
A visit to Badsberg’s wine-tasting center offers an authentic taste of Boland hospitality, complete with a special kiddies’ goodie box featuring snacks, drinks, and activities to keep the little ones entertained. The center is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays from 10:00 to 15:00, excluding Christmas Day and Easter weekend.
Conveniently located just 800 meters from the Goudini Spa holiday resort, 20 kilometers from Worcester, and 80 kilometers from Cape Town, Badsberg Wine Cellar offers a delightful destination for wine lovers eager to explore the rich flavours of the Breede Valley.
