Paul Clüver Family Wines from Elgin achieved an impressive feat by securing three Gold medals at this year’s prestigious International Wine Challenge (IWC) in London, one of the most rigorously judged and respected global wine competitions. Out of the 15 Gold medals awarded to South African wines, Paul Clüver earned three for its 2023 Sauvignon Blanc and its acclaimed Estate Chardonnay from the 2021 and 2022 vintages.
The IWC, evaluated by 500 international wine experts, attracts thousands of entries from 38 countries. Andries Burger, cellarmaster at Paul Clüver Family Wines, expressed that winning three Gold medals at the esteemed IWC is a testament to their consistent quality in viticulture, winemaking, and the unique expression of their vineyard’s geographical origin.
“As a pioneer of Chardonnay in the Elgin wine region, the two IWC Golds for our Estate Chardonnay affirm the commitment Paul Clüver Family Wines has shown to this cultivar since first planting it on the De Rust farm 37 years ago,” Burger said. He highlighted the unique terroir of Bokkeveld shale and clay soils, coupled with the region’s coolest climate, which imparts distinctive nuances to their Chardonnay.
Burger also celebrated the IWC Gold medal for their 2023 Sauvignon Blanc, acknowledging the intense competition in this category. “To deliver the IWC goods, one must present a Sauvignon Blanc with a real x-factor. Elgin’s soils, cool-climate, and extreme diurnal temperature variations provide the perfect conditions for producing outstanding Sauvignon Blanc,” he remarked. “This recognition from the IWC validates our passion and commitment to creating world-class wines.”
