Stellenbosch’s Polkadraai district sees a new player emerge as Le Chant unveils its third vintage of Chenin Blanc, showcasing the region’s prowess with this beloved Cape varietal.

Petri Venter, Le Chant’s winemaker, reflects on the dichotomy of the 2023 vintage, marked by distinct pre- and post-rain periods. Despite the challenges, meticulous farming practices prevailed, resulting in optimal fruit quality.
Benefiting from extended hang-time, the Chenin Blanc grapes develop vibrant flavours and balanced acidity. Venter’s careful vinification, blending stainless steel and French oak, enhances both fruit expression and textural complexity.

Eight months of ageing in a triad of vessels – old oak barrels, stainless steel, and cement tanks – add structure and depth to the wine, while preserving its freshness and clarity.
The resulting wine boasts a luscious palate with notes of stone fruit, orange blossom, and subtle apple, harmonized by oak influence and refreshing minerality.
However, the true star of Le Chant’s portfolio is its Polkadraai terroir, with south-facing vineyards, ocean breezes, and granite soils imparting distinct character to the wines.
Formerly Eikenhof farm established in 1824, Le Chant is now under the ownership of Oddo vins et Domaines, adding to its portfolio of esteemed wineries across France and Italy.
