As Vergenoegd Löw celebrates 330 years of dedicated stewardship this June, the historic Stellenbosch estate has been recognised as one of the Top 100 Sustainable Hotels and Resorts in the World. The honour, awarded by the International Sustainability Awards, highlights what judges describe as “a holistic model of regenerative hospitality.”
This accolade positions one of South Africa’s oldest working farms among the world’s leading examples of environmentally conscious luxury travel—seamlessly combining heritage preservation, ecological restoration, and deeply enriching guest experiences.
“This recognition affirms our belief that true luxury lies in authenticity, responsibility, and a deep respect for place,” says Corius Visser, Managing Director of Vergenoegd Löw. “Sustainability is not an added philosophy for us—it is the foundation of how we honour the estate’s 330-year legacy while shaping its future for generations to come.”
The awards panel further noted that, “in an era of rapidly evolving environmental responsibility, Vergenoegd Löw demonstrates how heritage, ecology, and meaningful guest experiences can exist as one cohesive offering.”
Visser adds that the evolution of luxury farm-based hospitality reflects a growing desire for calm, restorative, and regenerative stays on working farms—where exceptional local wine and culinary experiences are paired with a visible commitment to the land and its history.
“Today’s travellers are seeking deeper cultural connection and wellness rather than ostentation,” he says. “Each seasonal shift also brings new opportunities for immersive activities and experiences.”
Situated at the gateway to the Stellenbosch Winelands, the 160-hectare mixed-farming estate invites discerning travellers, culture enthusiasts, and advocates of regenerative agriculture to become part of its living story.
Vergenoegd Löw features an award-winning winery and two reimagined restaurants—one set to reopen in October—conceptualised by gastronomist Michelle Theron. The estate offers a collection of individually designed ultra-luxury suites, each equipped with either a private spa bath or heated swimming pool.
Guests can enjoy sweeping vineyard and mountain views, complimentary wine tastings, and curated artworks by acclaimed South African artists, including Dylan Lewis and Manuela Holzer. Additional experiences include a wellness spa, indigenous gardens, birdwatching, and unique features such as a labyrinth and puzzle maze.
A member of the exclusive European Heritage Project portfolio, the estate is home to beautifully restored 18th-century Cape Dutch architecture, collectively declared a National Monument in 1974.
Vergenoegd Löw is also a WWF Conservation Champion, recognised for its regenerative farming practices and ongoing restoration of indigenous habitats—efforts that have been in place since 2015.
This global recognition marks a defining moment in the estate’s 330-year journey, reinforcing its position at the forefront of heritage-led regenerative luxury farm travel.
