Not merely delightful but indispensable for life, salt boasts a staggering 14,000 recognized applications. The 14,001st use finds its home at Groote Post Vineyards, where salt serves as the muse for pioneering winemaking endeavors along the Cape West Coast.
Yet, it’s wise to approach this notion with a degree of skepticism, as the saying goes.
Indeed, in launching their latest creation, Groote Post selected an esteemed ocean-view landmark, renowned internationally for its transformation sparked by a single grain of corn! On the 24th of October, the 2023 Pinch of Salt Chardonnay by Groote Post felt entirely at ease within the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), etching a savory chapter into history.
Groote Post has long been dedicated to crafting wines that are unique in narrative, terroir, and taste. As an homage to its cool-climate Darling origin, Groote Post stands out from the ordinary through its non-conformist labels. In 2015, they introduced the “Salt of the Earth” blend of shiraz and cinsaut, along with “Seasalter,” the Sauvignon Blanc that revitalized the salt-kissed lifestyle of the West Coast wine scene. Both brands have since secured their positions at the pinnacle of the fine wine enthusiast’s repertoire.
Now, it’s time to rewrite the alphabet as “All About Chardonnay.”
It’s taken nearly a decade, but the drought has finally broken. Winemaker Lukas Wentzel, the embodiment of Groote Post’s maritime influence, reveals that nine years ago, they commenced the re-cultivation of their chardonnay vineyards, meticulously selecting superior clones and ideal locations for this grape variety. Wentzel affirms that the Pentz family, the proprietors of Groote Post, were captivated by the wisdom of their ancient chardonnay site, presenting an irresistible challenge: “How to embrace innovation while respecting tradition.”
Imagine yourself standing atop the highest hill on the estate. Feel the briny breeze and the sun-drenched soil of Swartland. Since the earth that has cradled Groote Post’s chardonnay vineyards for over three decades. It is in this south-facing, arid vineyard overlooking the ocean that the Pinch of Salt Chardonnay took its first breath.
A hint of clay, a touch of steel, and a whisper of wood.
Fermenting the Pinch of Salt Chardonnay in three distinct vessels results in a wine with layers of flavor and profound character, akin to how a pinch of salt elevates any dish. Wentzel’s formula incorporates three components: fifty percent stainless steel for a lively character, thirty percent French oak for richness, and twenty percent ancient clay amphora for a distinctive blend. Often, what we perceive as novel is, in fact, a reimagined essence from the past.
The outcome is a 2023 vintage with subtle wood notes, showcasing fresh acidity, minerality, and a zesty structure. Inhale the aromas of fresh stone fruit and lively citrus undertones. Savor the stony minerality complemented by crisp citrus and ripe yellow fruit flavors, all harmonized by a sustained, lively acidity. No additional seasoning is necessary.
