Prepare for an unparalleled wine-tasting journey at the 2024 Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Auction Showcase, where cutting-edge technology meets the artistry of winemaking. Sponsored by Nedbank, these events will introduce an innovative AI-powered visual tasting guide that blends digital creativity, art, and wine appreciation for a transformative experience.
The showcases will be held on 22 August at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and on 28 August at the Nedbank Atrium in Johannesburg. Attendees will have the chance to sample some of South Africa’s finest and most exclusive wines while engaging in a unique, tech-enhanced tasting adventure.
“At Nedbank, we’re focused on leveraging technology to elevate experiences across all walks of life,” says Khensani Nobanda, Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Nedbank. “Just as we innovate in digital banking, these CWG Showcase events bring that same spirit of accessibility and enjoyment to wine appreciation, making it more inclusive for everyone.”
The AI-powered visual tasting guides, which are central to this year’s “Art of Wine” theme, allow attendees to explore wine on a deeper level, regardless of their knowledge or expertise. Backed by research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, these guides present each wine alongside an AI-generated artwork that visually maps out its tasting profile, helping guests instantly identify and articulate flavour notes.
“From the zesty notes of grapefruit in a sauvignon blanc to the lush berry flavours in a Stellenbosch pinotage, these visual aids immerse attendees fully in the experience,” Nobanda adds. “It’s like having a personal sommelier by your side, guiding you every step of the way.”
Beyond the cutting-edge experience, these annual events also play a vital role in fostering the future of South African winemaking. All proceeds from the showcases benefit the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme, which provides opportunities for individuals from historically disadvantaged backgrounds to build successful careers in winemaking.
“Nedbank’s partnership with the Protégé Programme is a long-term investment in creating a diverse and skilled new generation of winemakers,” Nobanda emphasizes. “These events are not only about enjoying exceptional wine but also about shaping the future of our industry.”
