Vergelegen Wine Estate, a prominent player in South Africa’s wine industry, has revealed the selection of its new winemaker.
Assuming his role around September this year, Luke O’Cuinneagain follows in the esteemed footsteps of André van Rensburg (1998-2022) and Martin Meinert (1989-1998).
O’Cuinneagain’s winemaking journey includes serving as the winemaker at Glenelly Estate in Ida’s Valley, Stellenbosch, since 2008. He also boasts prior experience at Rustenburg Estate for five years. His international exposure encompasses stints at Château de Fieuzal and Château Angelus in Bordeaux, Caves Robert Dietrich in Alsace, and Screaming Eagle in California. O’Cuinneagain holds a B.Sc. Agric (Viticulture and Oenology) Honours from Stellenbosch University and has pursued financial studies at UCT Graduate School of Business.
Vergelegen’s Managing Director, Wayne Coetzer, expressed his enthusiasm for O’Cuinneagain’s arrival, stating, “His selection followed a rigorous evaluation process conducted by an independent panel of wine experts. From an initial pool of 29 applicants, we narrowed it down to six strong contenders. This procedure showcased the extensive reservoir of winemaking talent in South Africa, assuring us of the industry’s promising future.”
Coetzer emphasized the considerable legacy left by André van Rensburg, noting that his high standards of excellence pervade every facet of Vergelegen’s wine production, spanning viticulture, cellar operations, and scientific research. Coetzer also mentioned, “Thankfully, we can continue to savor André’s winemaking mastery with each vintage uncorked.”
